The responsibility and privilege of fatherhood begins during a woman’s pregnancy. During an unplanned pregnancy, a father can either step up to support the mother and encourage her to choose life, or he can say nothing. Worse yet, he can tell her “I’ll support whatever you decide” and let her make a potentially devastating choice. During a child’s early years, a father can provide vital guidance, correction, and love that leaves a lasting impact on his son or daughter. A strong father develops a delicate balance between gentle compassion and firm leadership.
Research shows that when fathers are involved, their children are:
2 times more likely to go to college
80% less likely to spend time in jail
75% less likely to experience teen pregnancy
A father can teach discipline and instruction, spiritual direction, emotional resilience, mental confidence, relational intimacy, and physical strength in ways that are unique to his masculine role. Young boys yearn for the example of a strong father, and young girls yearn for the security and stability that he brings.
“The father of a righteous child has great joy; a man who fathers a wise son rejoices in him.” Proverbs 23:24
Ultimately, a father is gifted with the role of showing his children who God is through his words and actions. God calls Himself our Father because He embodies all of the qualities that a father should possess: patient, kind, gentle, firm, just, loving, present, compassionate, and authoritative. Fathers have the privilege of reflecting God as our Heavenly Father to his children here on earth.
“The Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son.” Deuteronomy 1:31
